SEO tips - Amount of Content on Web Pages
Monday, November 2nd, 2009SEO is one of the most highly scrutinized fields of marketing or of technology. There are always new principles to remember, as old ones are proven incorrect or are made obsolete. An important SEO topic that is debated today is how much text should go on a webpage in order to get it ranked highly in the search engines. Everyone has their own opinion, and there is no single solution that will work for everybody. However, on the bright side there are basic principles you can use to help you develop your own successful strategy.
Some people feel that doing the minimum amount of work for anything to produce the maximum amount of results is the smartest strategy. In truth though, with SEO, the more content you have the better for your site. Every page on your website that you want to get ranked in the search engines has to provide something that enables that. A page with just a dozen words won’t rank, because there’s hardly anything there. Not only are you not associating yourself with your targeted market, but the page isn’t providing any true value. Therefore, the more content the better for SEO, as a very general guideline to begin your work.
Another important principle to keep in mind with this SEO topic is that the content you provide needs to be original and worthwhile. Yes, more content is better than less content, but all content is pointless if it’s nothing but excessively repeated keywords or copied material. You need to be providing content that people will actually be able to use and want to see, otherwise you will only be damaging yourself, your brand and your credibility. Your rankings will also suffer as a result.
Now, keeping these two general SEO guides in mind, you can establish a bare minimum for what your pages should include. This bare minimum should be roughly 250 words depending on the kind of page that you have. Many people include upwards of 2,000 words on a single page, and there’s nothing wrong with that either. But you have to keep in mind that you want your pages to look good and flow smoothly, and too much content can hinder that. Also, dividing larger pages into smaller sub pages merely provides you with more individual pages that can get ranked in the search engines.
Ultimately, your mission with SEO and page content is to make your page unique, fresh and highly aligned with your market in the eyes of the search engines. On top of that, the content you provide needs to be worthwhile enough to site visitors so that they will actually look at it and put it to use. In many cases, 250 words will get the job done, but in many others 500 words are needed and on down the line.
Therefore, you must remember to try to satisfy both of those opposing forces when you use SEO. You don’t need thousands of words on a webpage, and you certainly should always avoid excessive repetition of keywords and copying content from other sites. By including a minimum of content on all pages that you want ranked, in the range of 250 words or more, you will give yourself a fighting chance to be ranked highly.
