Down in the Delta: With her life a mess and essentially no desire to work, lone mother Woodard boards the bus with her 2 kids to spend the summer in the Mississippi Delta, living with family members and worlking in their restaraunt. Episodic drama recoups from awkward start to better points. Woodard beams and Freeman gives one of the best acting jobs of his career. Cast includes Alfre Woodard, Al Freeman, Jr., Wesley Snipes, Mary Alice, Esther Rolle, and Loretta Devine. (111 minutes, 1998)
The Great New Wonderful: Striking drama, set one year after 9-11, concentrates on a variety of New Yorkers who either are battling to handle their emotions in regards to that atrocious night or in reference to their lives as if nothing had occurred. They contain a couple with a dysfunctional child, an older lady snared in a miserable matrimony, a set of security guards, and an outwardly affable accountant who worked at the World Trade Center, and survived. Discreet, incisive research of suppressed anger uses humor and observation to dramatize the importance of living a life that has meaning. Cast includes Olympia Dukakis, Jim Gaffigan, Judy Greer, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tom McCarthy, Sharat Saxena, Naseeruddin Shah, Tony Shalhoub, Stephen Colbert, Dick Latessa, Can Amett, Anita Gillette, and Edie Falco. (87 minutes, 2006)
The Educators: A verbose and overlong, sarcastic investigation of political idealism and hypocrisy in current Germany. A set of boisterous youthful liberals (Brihl and Erceg) see themselves as 21st-century Robin Hoods, which gives them a reason to crack into the houses of the weak and infermed. Problems surface while Erceg’s lady friend (Jentsch) partakes in one of their adventures. (137 minutes, 2004)
Belle de Jour: Bunuel’s wry and upsetting story of a virginal newlywed who works the night switch in a high-style Parisian brothel, unbeknownst to her spouse. Bunuel’s recipe of stunning topic belies the acute humor of his script (co-written with Jean Claude Catriere). Cast includes Catherine Deneuve, Jean Sorel, Michel Piccoli, Genevieve Page, Francisco Rabal, and Pierre Clementi. (100 minutes, 1967)
The Sea Shall Not Have Them: British bomber airplane is taken down into the sea throughout WW2 and a save try is made to resuce it. Cast includes Michael Redgrave, Dirk Bogarde, Anthony Steel, Nigel Patrick, Nigel Green, and Rachel Kempson. (91 minutes, 1954)
The Search for One-Eyed Jimmy: Oddball tale of a documentary film maker, just out of college, who returns to his old Brooklyn community and finds cinematic encouragement as his camcorder follows the track of a missing local low life. Cast includes Samuel L. Jackson, Steve Buscemi, Michael Badalucco, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Anne Meara, Jennifer Beals, Nicholas Turturro, Aida Turturro, Holt McCaIIany, Sam Rockwell, and Tony Sirico. (82 minutes, 1996)
Cherish: Unconventional tale of a black sheep who’s victimized by a stalker and then engaged in a mishap that lands her in prison however her “jail” is a condo, with an electric gadget shackled to her ankle limiting her movement. In time, the deputy who controls the instrument gets to be her only buddy. Crisp, unique thriller set in San Francisco. Cast includes Robin Tunney, Tim Blake Nelson, Nora Dunn, Brad Seek, Lindsay Crouse, Liz Phair, and Jason Priestley. (102 minutes, 2002)
Rhythm on the Range: Ruined N.Y.C. “city gal” runs away on the eve of her marriage ceremony and heads west to avoid gangsters. She meets a cowboy, who tries to win her over. Involving, featherweight musical comedy contains Bing’s attractive rendition of “I Can’t Run from You.” Cast includes Bing Crosby, Frances Farmer, Bob Bums, Martha Raye, Lucille Gleason, Samuel S. Hinds, Louis Prima, and Leonid Kinskey. (85 minutes, 1936)
Gun the Man Down: Injured outlaw avows retribution on cohorts who left him in the middle of a stickup gone badly. Cast includes James Arness, Angie Dickinson, Robert Wilke, and Emile Meyer. (78 minutes, 1956)
