On your online store, you may have a few selections for a specific item. In your store you may display these items according to cost. The typical online shopper is not searching for every item you have to offer. They are searching for one brand and one style at every store that offers that one specific item.

In a small town, a local store owner is probably complaining that he has a specific item that he bought from his supplier, and that it will not sell until he discounts it at the end of the season. However, this same item is being sold in the big city and has customers lining up around the block hoping to get a chance to buy this specific item as soon as it is delivered.

Putting his inventory online allows the kids in the big city to find the shoes they want regardless of what small town store has them. It takes a bit to wrap your head around the concept, but suffice it to say that the online shopper is going to be more specific about what they are looking for and they dont really care where your store actually is as long as you can get the product they want delivered to them.

If you are a traditional store that wants to sell your products online, instead of trying to sell things online that you can not move in your store, it is going to be vital to your success to offer your products from the top down. Your website is proof that you are trying to be a player in the new way of doing business. But now you have to index your site in the way that can be found by the Search Engines, your products can be identified and produced as relevant when a search is done.

Rather than showing a picture of your product and writing a caption under it that says something like This is a very popular item this year, use specific terms that someone would search for when they are looking for this exact product. This will take a little more effort and refining but diligence and persistence pay off.

The other thing that takes some understanding and patience is to know that the Search Spider does not live on your website. He has other places to go too. You have to allow him time to get around to checking out your changes.

Dont be afraid to do some investigative work on your own. Check out your competition. See how they describe the products on their site. A little homework on your part will also help you get an understanding of what youre up against.

SEO is essentially a constantly evolving study of what factors the search engines take into account when they ‘rank’ you in their natural search listings. Natural or ‘organic’ lists form the main body of a SE page. Paid listings are separate to natural listings. The paid listings are typically in a yellow section at the top of the page, and in a column down the right hand side. The ‘natural’ listings are straight from the main index. They show sites listed in the order of importance and relevance - according to their algorithm.

Plainly our aim is to get our site up with the top ones. We’ve little chance of being seen if we’re way down the list on page 7. Only those in the Search Engine’s ‘inner circle’ know all the factors used to position sites. It isn’t something they publicise to the rest of us!

As a result, we now have a very skilled bunch of professionals focused on optimisation. On the Search Engine side you have upgraded technological patents being regularly filed. (To cause as much uncertainty as possible!) On the other hand, there’s Search Engine Optimisation. This utilises a series of tests and measurements to determine the most pertinent factors.

Search Engine Optimisation deals with both on-page and off-page issues. A certain amount of page ranking weight can be attributed to off web geographic influences. SEO can’t control these though. (We will cover off page optimisation in a separate article.)

ON PAGE SEO Explained

Adjusting a site’s content to make it friendlier to the SE’s is called On Page optimisation. This is quite straight-forward - it simply requires correctly setting up your site. Factors like: The correct use and density of keywords and internal linking; H1 and H2 header tags and meta tags.

If all that is complete double-dutch to you, then don’t worry - you’re not alone! For the most part, although this work isn’t complicated, its effects are minimal. In fact, it is widely believed that it has very little effect at all anymore. There was a time when SE’s were ‘duped’ by On-Page optimisation. That’s not how it is now though.

On-Page can still be important though if Off-Page has been taken care of. Then it’s worthwhile to manipulate your web pages and have some internal links.

Take Counsel - Avoid doing SEO on keywords that have millions of listings. ‘Car Insurance’ is a term to stay away from - unless you want to compete with 70,000,000 others! Anyone can see it’s not wise to try and compete with 70 million other pages when you’re just starting out!

However… The phrase ‘Southampton Car Insurance’ only brings in three hundred thousand. (Assuming I was a car insurance provider in Southampton.) That number probably still looks large, but it’s targetable for optimisation.

We can do much more with this. In point of fact, a phrase like Car insurance would massively set me back. I would actually be competing with the insurance conglomerates! So not a great idea - especially, in fact, when there are much better ways to go about it.

Therefore, we’re looking for phrases that yield less overall results - but quite accurately sum up what we do or what we offer. In SEO terms, they’re referred to as Long Tail Searches, as they include several relevant words. Long tail can be anything from two to about seven words long. It depends on your competition. Usually, a long-tail phrase is three or four words.

We like to start Search Engine Optimisation using terms that yield less than 500K. Occasionally we’ll accept bigger numbers, but only if the results at the top haven’t been optimised well. We’ll automatically move up the ratings for the more popular search terms as we gain more back-links. If we’ve worked well, we can start hitting the bigger terms in a few months time. A plan like this is more strategic to start with. We’re looking for people who want to buy, so we use terms with a commercial intention!

You should also build back links to various different pages - and not just your website’s homepage. The Search Engines like this - especially Google. A good example would be product group or category pages. It’s worth driving specific search terms to these pages - they often have links to lots of other product pages. Do not simply build links to your website’s home page. The SE’s are becoming increasingly interested in how a site’s individual pages are listed.
